We loved the idea that the person talking vividly about their alien encounter could just as easily be talking about their first ever punk rock show, and it was this ‘alien’ feeling that we wanted to capture. Mathy & Fran

Stumbling upon this sci-fi music short leaves a long lasting impression. It explores a first-encounter with a live music event. An experience of transcendence

‘The Lights And Then The Noise’ was written and directed by Mathy & Fran, featuring No Age and starring Emily Taafe.

Nominated for the British Council Best UK Short award at the London Short Film Festival.

Cine Real Film Club

CINÉ-REAL is a non-for-profit film club with the aim of bringing together film makers, actors, writers, directors, producers, photographers, cinefiles etc, to enjoy classic films as film and share a passion for the moving image. The films shown are all 16mm prints. They are also all examples of how technical or financial limitations actually led to the development of a new style, such as the use of jump cuts in French New Wave, due to lack of film stock, or building tension in Jaws by only revealing the shark in the last 3rd, because the mechanical shark, looked mechanical!..Creation from limitation.

28th February at The Russet

Doors open at 7pm for drinks, food and conversation. Film rolls at 8pm sharp

The video has no post fx. The realtime projected graphics are inspired by dazzle patterns, optical illusions and neon disco lights. They are controlled by an illuminated motion-control mic and stand, and are mapped to different bands of the frequency spectrum creating a sound reactive environment. You will be able to see this technology live in a different guise at selected Jamie Lidell shows this year.

The 2 hour foundation course in fire manipulation is taught by one of the UK’s best fire artists and teachers, Red Sarah, at Hackney Downs Studios. She has over 16 years experience of performing with fire, is a trained fire marshal and is fully insured to share her knowledge. Traditionally fire eating and fakir were only taught by one master to one student , keeping the tricks of the trade very much secret. But modern times need modern measures and everyone wants to take advantage of cool (or rather red hot) experiences. This is one of those.

Everyone who has taken the course has come away with a feeling of self empowerment and confidence.

After all, if you can master fire, surely you can overcome anything.

We are looking for an ambitious creative to further the events programming at our largest warehouse site, Hackney Downs Studios. The short term contract will involve 6 weeks, during which the candidate will research, develop and curate 2-3 events. The candidate will return to site in the final run up to the each event. This role is an opportunity for an experienced individual to showcase their event programming skills. A disciplined mind is essential, with a strong knowledge of the creative events world.

Other roles

Experienced multi-trader/all rounder to join a team of builders, currently working on an exciting design and creative build project. Must be experienced in site work with a carpentry (first fix), roofing, plastering/wet trade background. Would be required to work on separate smaller projects leading a team of 2 or 3.
